A bit about me & this blog.

There are plenty of words that I could use to describe myself. 

Husband. Mario Kart Champ. Dad. Former low-income housing guru. Jesus-follower. Taco lover. Children's Pastor. 

It's that last one that inspired this blog. So, a bit more about that.

I've served as a volunteer team leader at a large church in Michigan. A children's pastor at medium-sized church in Indiana - the middle of the Bible Belt - for 4 years. And again at an super-conservative (and declining) church in Minnesota for a couple of years. And now at a diverse, growing church in the DC-Metro area. I also have a Master's in Children's & Family Ministry from Bethel Seminary. I've been some places, seen some things, experienced successes & hardships. And I still love what I do.

And, now a new word to describe me. Blogger.

Why add one more voice to the online cacophony? 

I suppose the shortest answer is that I just can't keep what I've learned & experienced to myself. It seems kind of selfish to do that. The average tenure of a children's pastor/director (whatever your church calls you!) is only about 2-3 years. Not a whole of lot of time to gain experience. And not a whole lot of time to focus on & cast vision.

And so, I just can't keep my experiences to myself. I'll share some of my vision for children's ministry. My experiences. My successes. My failures. Anything that I hope can help.

And I want to hear back from you, too. As the Canadian comic Red Green reminds us - we're all in this together!

I won't focus a lot on the best place to purchase craft supplies or my favorite gluten-free toddler snacks.

It will be a lot more about #WhyIDoWhatIDo.

One of my favorite children's ministry resources is a book by Aaron Reynolds called The Fabulous Reinvention of Sunday School . Aaron was a part of the team at Willow Creek, and has some great things to say about transforming Sunday School classes into fun, engaging, transformative environments.  The book came out in 2007, and was really revolutionary in many ways. The whole "large group/small group" thing was just starting to become a thing, thanks to the emergence of curricula like 252 Basics. Aaron's focus on dramatic storytelling, environment, technology & production was cutting edge.  I was leading a 4th/5th grade Sunday School class, and some friends and I were just starting to dream & imagine what a much more engaging church experience for kids might look like. Who is Jesus, and what did He mount ... and, what's a sermon?

As I was preparing to share something from the Sermon on the Mount with kids last weekend, I had an "ah-ha" moment. And it has something to do with my daughters.   My daughters do some amazing things. And, like most kids, they want to share their amazingness with me. My oldest daughter, a junior in high school, is taking college  calculus (proud dad moment!). She likes to start conversations like this: Did that help me understand? Uhhhhh ... no. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- My next daughter is a freshman, and she is a spectacular artist. Last year, she worked on digital smudge painting (didn't even know that was a real thing!).
